Fear of heights ranks right up there on the list of Top Fears. It certainly does for me. I have a hard time even looking over the rail of our loft at home without feeling dizzy and the onset of nausea. Ladders, observation decks and Ferris Wheels just aren’t on my list of Top 100,000 Places to Be.
But last week when I was in Chicago, one of the speakers challenged us to stand with our toes on the edge of the cliff.
She said that standing back a few feet from the edge puts you in a safer place, but planting your toes right up on the edge and looking over takes some courage. And, boy, what a view you’re rewarded with though! The edge opens up a vista that you can’t even fathom when you’re planted a few feet further back.
How many of us as business owners stay in that safe place, a few feet from the edge, unable to see the possibilities before us? And whose business story is a cliffhanger, a success tale created by venturing out to the edge and exploring the possibilities from a height that make most people scared and uncomfortable?
